House in Bovina 1 is a 2-story, contemporary shed-style structure located in the Catskills Mountain region of New York state. At less than 1000 square feet the project was designed to maximize the footprint of an existing slab found on the site while providing a flexible living and remote working space for the owners and their frequent guests.
The re-purposed slab foundation, locally sourced finish materials, and limited disturbance to the former agricultural site imbue the project with a spirit of reclamation and reinvention. Carefully arranged punched windows frame unique views of the mountains in the distance. Meanwhile, the use of charred cladding as the primary exterior finish material pays a curious homage to the previous structure that occupied the property but was mysteriously lost to fire- another reclamation of a small piece of local history.
